Claudius II Gothicus, Roman Emperor (268-270) had restricted to his young soldiers to get married to avoid emotional issues while those soldiers go to war and leave their love ones behind. In Cloudius II's thought, marriage made his men weak so he issued an edict forbidding marriage to assure quality soldiers.

The ban on marriage was a great shock for the Romans but no one dared to raise their voices to protest against their mighty emperor.
Bishop Valentine realized this injustice and saw the trauma of young lovers. He planned to counter the monarch's orders in secrecy. Whenever lovers went to Valentine, he sercretely performed marriage for young lovers. But this activity couldn't remain hidden for long. The secret marriages were out to Claudius II arrested Valentine immediately.
Bishop Valentine was said to have some kind of mysterious power. When he was in the jail, he healed many people by his saintly ability. He even helped to cure the jailor's blind daughter.
Claudius II was very impressed by Valentine's such ability and diginity. He offered Valentine to convert a Roman God but Valentine refused. This angered Claudius II and he executed Valentine on 14th Feb, 270 AD.
