‘Honour’ Killing: Afghan family in Canada found guilty

Three members of an Afghan immigrant family in Canada have been convicted first-degree murder of four female relatives in a so-called ‘honour’ killing on Sunday. Husband Mohammed Shafia, wife Tooba Yahya and son Hamed will serve at least 25 years in prison.
The bodies of first wife (Rona Amir 52) and three teenage girls (Zainab 19, Sahar 17 & Geeti13) were found in a car submerged in a canal in the city of Kingston, Ontario in 2009.
The bodies of three girls found along with the body of their father’s first wife in the Rdeau Canal in June 2009.
The prosecution claims Mohammed, Tooba and Hamed drowned those four victims, placed their bodies in the car and then pushed it into the canal with the family’s other car.
The court heard, the father, Mohammad Shafia was angered by two eldest daughters wanting boyfriends in defiance of his values, said prosecutors. He had become increasingly angry and upset with his three teenage daughters of having secret relationships with boys and wearing revealing clothes. At the same time, wife wanted to divorce and supported daughters wish to live according to western norms.
The family moved to Canada in 2007. Mohammed married Tooba because Rona was unable to have children. Tona was living with Mohameed and Tooba until her murder along 3 girls.
(Honour Killing: It is complex but brutal reaction within family against someone who is perceived to have brought ‘shame’ upon relatives which continues to this day predominantly in South Asia and Middle Eastern countries and their diaspora around the world.)
