Buddha was born in Lumbini, Nepal
Buddha was born in "Shakya" kingdom which lies in Rupandehi district, Lumbini zone of Nepal. His real name is Siddhartha Gautam Shakya and "Shakya" is one of existing surnames among many caste in Nepal. Many people do not know Nepal is an independant country lies between China and India.
Many people and media refer Nepal as "Northern India" or "Himalaya". The fact is, Nepal is known as Kingdom of Himalaya, Beauty of Nature, Country full of Temples, Only Hindu country in the world, Homeland of Gurkhas, so on and on.. and yes, Mt. Everest is also in Nepal.
Couple of Hollywood movies have featured Nepal where they have referred Nepal as "Himalaya". For eg. Indiana Jones, 7 years in Tibet, 2012 etc.
Some global maps don't even show Nepal at all which is very sad for all Nepalis. Nepal has older calander than BC and current date is 23/10/2068 (06/02/2012) which means Nepal was civilized years back than Western or European countries. Unfortunately, Nepal remained behind in terms of development for some reason, mainly political isntability.
